Great, the test itself was in the news. Now Luna knew without a doubt that any failure would be breathlessly discussed in the comments section of LetsDish.net by a bunch of self-described foodies.
A knock on her doorframe made her turn around. Jean-Pierre stood there, silhouetted in the light from the hallway.
âWould you mind if I joined you?â JP said. He held up a sleek black leather case that looked like it could be a luxury shaving kit. âThese time zone differences. I was supposed to take the testostérone yesterday, but what with all this excitementâ¦â
âSure. Pull up a chair.â Luna kicked at her wheeled desk chair with her foot, nudging it away from the wall. She herself took a seat on the bed.
Jean-Pierre nodded his thanks as he sat. He opened his kit on the desk to reveal a neatly arranged set of syringes and needles of varying sizes.
She held out a small white square packet. âNeed an alcohol swab?â
âAh, thank you. I am always forgetting to restock this.â JP took the square and laid it atop the barrels of the syringes, then began wriggling out of his tight black trousers.
Luna tried very hard not to stare, even though she was kind of curious. Would it be lime briefs again, or some other color? She concentrated on drawing her estrogen from its little bottle. âWhere do you usually give yourself the shot?â
âSometimes, I am so weary from traveling I can barely roll up my sleeve and use my arm. Tonight, I can manage a thigh, I think.â He looked up at her, flashing a cheeky smile. âAnd you?â
Luna returned the smile with one of her own. âButt, most of the time. Thigh in polite company.â She couldnât stop herself from glancing. The briefs were sky blue today. Very jaunty.
âDo not change your habits on my account. I will look away, if you wish.â JP fitted a needle to a syringe and began drawing his own medication. âI am quite impressed, actually; le derrière is ideal, I hear, yet I can never seem to twist around well enough to see what Iâm doing.â
Luna held her syringe up to the light and flicked the barrel a few times to make sure there were no bubbles. âIâm very flexible,â she said. âLeg is fine for tonight. Do you want an ice pack?â
JP shook his head. âI am fine, thank you.â He held up his own needle, eyebrow raised. âShall we?â
Luna had never actually done this with someone else before. Sure, there had been nurses present when she was first being taught how to inject herself, but sheâd never had an injection buddy, even though plenty of her friends were on HRT. It felt like such a private thing, like tweezing your eyebrows or scrubbing behind your ears. And yet, she was not bothered by the idea of doing this with him.
She gave JP a nod, feeling strangely shy as they ripped open their alcohol swab packets in unison and rubbed circles on their bare thighs.
